Healthcare Data Analytics: Methods of Matching Scarce Resources with Uncertain Patient Demand, Integer Linear Optimization for Staffing and Scheduling

Integer Linear Optimization is a very powerful and resourceful methodology for developing rather complex optimized staffing and schedule schemes.

In contrast to general LO, the Integer LO produces the optimal solution for staffing that is strictly constrained to integer numbers rather than real fractional ones and, thus, should not be rounded off to the nearest integers. The latter usually results in a sub optimal solution.

This webinar provides multiple practical examples of its application using the Excel Add-in solver. The examples are based on real staffing and scheduling problems taken from the hospital practice.

Linear Optimization (LO) is the quantitative methodology that incorporates many variables (called decision variables) into a model and finds the best set of decision variables. The best set of the decision variables called the optimal solution is the set that makes the value of some criterion called Objective Function (OF) maximal or minimal within some restricted space that forms constraints. Linear Optimization (LO) is the methodology for finding the optimal solutions for resource allocation, such as equipment or service lines; purchase mix; staffing & scheduling, and many others.

This webinar is focused on a special case of LO called Integer Linear Optimization.

Alexander is the lead editor and author of 2 books, 8 book chapters, 10 journal papers, and a speaker at 18 international conferences & webinars in the area of operations management and data analytics. As an adjunct faculty at the UW-Milwaukee Lubar School of Business, he developed and taught a graduate course Business 755-Healthcare Delivery Systems-Data Analytics. He worked 12 years for GE (General Electric) Healthcare as a Data Scientist and CT Detector design engineer, 3 years for Froedtert Hospital, the largest healthcare facility in Southern state of Wisconsin, and 5 years for Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin as a lead computer simulation and system improvement consultant.
